Ryan Patel is a Second Vice President based in our London office and he is closing in on 10 years of experience in technology. Throughout his time at Northern Trust, he has worked on several projects as a technical project manager as well as the team’s portfolio manager sitting across all projects under Global Solution Application Management. He has led the successful rollout of several externally hosted applications as well as successful upgrades of key platforms and supported the team with the transition to agile.

Describe your role at Northern Trust

I currently manage a team called Global Solutions Application Management. The team manages and owns a number of bank used applications. I manage the day-to-day operations of the team; being responsible and accountable for all project delivery, maintaining production stability and ensuring we are always compliant with any audits that take place.

Describe your team – who’s part of your team, where are they located

The team is well supported by several well experienced members to help towards our goals. They are made up of teammates and contractors that are located in London, Ireland, Guernsey and various parts of India. They are all uniquely skilled to best benefit the team delivery of our projects.

Take us through how you ended up at Northern? What brought you here?

I joined Northern Trust as a graduate Tech project manager after university contracting through an IT learning and development company. After two years, I was able, due to the support of my then manager, to be converted to a full-time employee.

As the organization evolved, so did my role and I was beginning to be exposed to more project work with more responsibility. I was given the chance to act as the portfolio manager for my current team working closely with them to help them through our migration to Agile from Waterfall and continuing to project management within the team. Finally, and most recently (last August) I took over the team as the manager.

What are you most proud of in your career at Northern Trust so far?

I think I am most proud of our team’s initial foray into the agile world which was a difficult move considering it is changing the way I and the rest of the team operate, especially within our mindsets.

I think I and the team are all better for it and we continue to progress and learn.

When did you realize that Northern Trust was a good fit for your career?

It is hard to pinpoint the “Moment”, but I think that over the years I have enjoyed my time working here and I have had great management that has helped me throughout my time here and continues to help and drive me towards my goals.

What technology/technologies have you been excited to work with here at Northern Trust?

Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Both being relatively new to Northern Trust; we are really starting to develop our cloud journey now, but I also look forward to seeing how AI develops at Northern Trust, how we can best utilize it and the opportunities it creates for us as an organization and importantly, our clients.

What would you say to someone considering a career at Northern Trust?

I would say that based on my experiences it is a great place to work. I have really enjoyed my time here so far, my career has advanced and been developed from my senior leaders and I have made lifelong friends along the way which is an added bonus.
