Our History

During the height of the “Gilded Age” of corruption and conspicuous consumption, one of Chicago's most respected and influential bankers saw the need for a bank that embodied service, expertise and integrity.

On August 12, 1889, Byron Laflin Smith opened The Northern Trust Company. Ever since, we have stayed true to those core principles.
