Hear from our recent interns and graduates across APAC early career talent
“Step up, have confidence and embrace the richness of experiences you can have.” Mike O’Grady, Northern Trust Global Chairman and CEO.
Our Early Career Programs in APAC (Asia Pacific): Internships, Co-Ops and Apprenticeships.
Our internships and co-op programs are short to medium term work experience usually for current students, that provides entry-level exposure within the financial services and funds world.
Our interns and co-ops complete the same type of work as those in an entry level role after graduation, providing real world experience. They gain tangible skills to take forward in their careers and with a clearer future focus as they enter the full-time workforce after graduation.
We recently asked some of our current and past interns and graduates to share their perspectives on our programs and their experiences with us.
Here’s what they told us……
How did the Northern Trust internship /coop prepare you for the world of work after graduation?
I started out as an APAC technology intern at Northern Trust working in the AI/ML domain and returned to the organization as a part of NTAM Core Data Services. I learned how to solve problems on the fly, collaborate with diverse teams and everything else that you cannot learn from a textbook. The internship paved the way for me to build a network of professionals, giving me insights into different career paths and what it takes to succeed after graduation.
What was the best part of your Northern Trust internship/coop?
A cliched answer - my team at Alternative Investments, Asset Servicing. It was incredibly rewarding to see my contributions being used and valued by the team. Beyond that, I truly cherish the mentorship I received - getting advice and insights from experienced professionals who were genuinely invested in my growth.
My fellow interns and I came from different backgrounds, with different stories, but we quickly became a tight-knit crew. Whether we were brainstorming ideas, or just chatting away to unwind, we supported each other every step of the way. We laughed a lot, learned even more, and pushed each other to be our best.
How did Northern Trust keep you engaged during your internship / coop?
From the very first week, we had regular check-ins, where we could share our progress, ask questions, and get feedback. These sessions made us feel supported and valued, and they kept us motivated to keep pushing ourselves.
But it wasn’t all work—there was plenty of fun too on Fridays! We had virtual chats, team-building activities, and even some friendly competitions that brought us closer together. It was made sure there was always something exciting on the horizon, keeping the experience dynamic and engaging from start to finish.
What do you feel differentiates Northern Trust’s intern / coop program from other intern / coop programs?
Right off the bat, the way we recruit interns through a hackathon is unique. I was glad that I got to use my technical skills and produce something creative with my cohort. I don't remember any other recruiter following anything like that. The focus wasn’t just on completing tasks but on helping us understand the 'why' behind what we were doing, which made the experience much more enriching.
Why did you choose to work for Northern Trust after university?
During my internship, I experienced firsthand Northern Trust’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and personal growth. The culture here fosters continuous learning, and teams genuinely supportive and passionate about what they do. I knew that staying here would not only challenge me but also provide the perfect environment to build a meaningful and fulfilling career.
There was no reason not to return to Northern Trust.

My Internship Experience
The 10-week internship program was perfectly designed to blend college students into efficient working professionals. The initial training period was not only focused on technical skills, but equal weight was also given to developing soft skills, which are necessary to thrive in the corporate world. From building our own personal brand, and business writing skills to secure coding, cyber security awareness sessions were conducted which kept us engaged throughout the tenure of the internship.
The cherry on top of this was when our creative and playful side came out on ‘Fun Fridays’ with our fellow interns. The regular meetups with senior management made us realize that they were interested in new talent by the efforts they made to connect with us regularly.
One such memorable experience was the one-on-one session with APAC Chief Technology Officer Hema Chandrashekhar Ma’am. Northern Trust provided us with many wonderful opportunities to network and collaborate with many talented and ambitious personalities.
Developing projects provided me with concurrent learning of technical and domain knowledge. Moreover, it helped me get acquainted with organizational processes, best practices, work ethic, teamwork and the company culture. We also had the opportunity to present our projects to the senior leadership team, which was enriching and a true highlight.
The internship at Northern Trust was truly a spectacular experience and a perfect start for my career!
I am currently completing my Bachelors of Technology in Information Technology from Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Pune. I joined Northern Trust as an intern last summer and it has been an exciting journey so far.
Choosing Northern Trust
While looking for internship opportunities in top reputed companies, I decided to look for a company which provided good opportunities to learn and grow. The factors which attracted me towards Northern Trust over others, were its principles and values as well as the team’s culture. When I received the offer letter, I was very happy to start my career here at Northern Trust.
About my learnings and Experience at Northern Trust
While working with the Tax and Pricing team, along with the technical skills like Spring, Spring boot I also learned the importance of soft skills, with a focus on collaboration, communication, and teamwork.
I have been given the opportunity to network with many leaders here. We have had networking sessions with them which helped us get plenty of insights into the company, life at Northern Trust, their experience in life, and advice on building our career.
