Plan sponsors are continually evaluating ways to improve retirement readiness for their plan participants. While the options for doing this are multifaceted, one emerging approach is to offer alternative assets within defined contribution (DC) plans. Incorporating alternatives can help increase investment diversification and potentially provide improved returns. However, there are some inherent challenges that have held back their usage, including liquidity and valuation concerns as well as legal and regulatory implications.
