John McCareins, CAIA, CIMA
Head of International
John McCareins’ travels around the world have helped prepare him for his latest role as Head of International Asset Management, leading Northern Trust Asset Management’s business in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and across Asia Pacific (APAC).
Previously, John had been based in Hong Kong for seven years as head of Asset Management for APAC before moving to London to take on his newly created role in July 2023. This new role was part of a broader strategy shift after Daniel Gamba joined Northern Trust from BlackRock and became the President of Asset Management in April 2023.
Prior to Hong Kong, John was in the US as practice lead of the outsourced CIO group, heading a team that oversaw programs with more than $60bn in assets.
When Values Align
Coming out of undergrad at Northwestern, John interviewed with several firms but felt that Northern Trust was the best fit because of their commitment to DE&I, as well as the interactions he had with the people during the interview process.
“I didn’t see any people that looked like me at most of the other firms I met with,” he shared. “As a new graduate, it was nice to be in an environment where the people you aspire to be like, and their behavior, demonstrate diversity and values that align with mine.”
Northern Trust made such a strong impression on John that, in 2005, he returned to the company after business school and having worked for another firm. His seven roles at Northern Trust have spanned locations including Chicago, Stamford, Hong Kong, a brief pandemic-driven stint in Singapore, and now London.
“I love working for an organization that competes successfully but is equally interested in the communities we serve and in the people that make up this organization,” he said.
Stretching Yourself
After gaining experience in the U.S., John wanted to learn more about the business overseas. He volunteered to lead client opportunities and take on stretch assignments in the Middle East, South America and Europe, gaining exposure to other markets, trends and learning how different investors think. “I take pride in being open to trying new things,” he explained. “Being comfortable in the uncomfortable, thriving in environments of ambiguity."
Despite never visiting Asia, his curiosity led him to embrace the chance to run the Asset Management business in APAC. And when the opportunity arose for him to pivot to England to serve as Head of International, John was eager to take on a new adventure.
Creating Balance
John is not new to adjusting his work schedule to accommodate colleagues around the world. Most days, he starts his day connecting with APAC colleagues and then spends time with his EMEA colleagues and clients.
When the workday in London is winding down, Chicago and other North America partners are just getting started — this often leads to calls with Chicago partners to wrap up his working day. After signing off for the day, John usually enjoys spending his evenings with family and friends.
John is passionate about enhancing the employee experience and offering his teams flexibility. During the pandemic, he heard stories from colleagues who were suddenly able to regularly share meals with family for the first time in their careers or replace their commute with exercise or a hobby. John continues to encourage people to take care of their wellbeing both in and outside of the workplace.
Humanity, Humility, Hope
Over the course of his 20-plus-year career, John has developed his philosophy around what he refers to as the three “H”s: Humanity, Humility, and Hope.
“I try to be hypersensitive to our people—their hopes, dreams, insecurities and origin stories—and I try to be equally transparent with them to build authentic relationships,” he said.
John seeks to encourage, empower and inspire his team in navigating day-to-day fires without losing sight of a employee’s long-term growth and shared business aspirations.
“Part of leadership is developing people,” he said. “I’m regularly thinking, ‘How can I pay it forward?’”
