Diversity Project

Northern Trust is a founding member Nicsa's Diversity Project in the United States and a member of the Diversity Project in the United Kingdom. Diversity Project is a cross-company, industry initiative which seeks to drive measurable change for member firms, and for the global asset management industry as a whole. Its mission is to promote a diverse and inclusive asset management industry with the right talent to deliver the best possible results for clients, to reflect society, and to ensure long-term business sustainability. Teresa Parker, President – Europe, Middle East and Africa, serves on the CEO Advisory Council for Diversity Project United Kingdom.

Armed Forces Covenant (United Kingdom)

As a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, Northern Trust has publicly pledged its support for existing or prospective employees who are veterans (including those who are wounded or sick), reservists, cadet instructors and military spouses or partners. We are committed to providing them with job opportunities. In July 2020, the UK Ministry of Defence awarded us with the Gold award on the scheme for our commitment to veterans.

Women in Finance Charter (United Kingdom)

Northern Trust is a signatory to the Women in Finance Charter (“the Charter”). Established by the HM Treasury in the United Kingdom (UK), the Charter aims to bring companies together to work to build a balanced and fair financial services industry. We believe that such cross-industry efforts are vital to our industry’s success. As of December 2024, 45 percent of our global headcount was female, and 39 percent of our global senior management was female. As participants, we acknowledge the role we play in creating a balanced and fair financial services industry.  We are focused on supporting and developing women at all levels and will continue to actively engage our managers and leaders across the organisation to drive progress.

When we signed the Charter in May 2017, we had 31 percent female representation in senior management in the UK. As of December 2024, 32 percent of our senior management in the UK was female.  In 2024, approximately 49 percent of our senior management hiring in the UK was female. Whilst we recognise meaningful change will take time, we remain committed to increasing our focus on pipeline development and promotion of senior women, and believe we are on track to meet our Charter target of 38 percent female representation in senior management positions in the UK by our deadline of December 2030.

Women in Finance Charter (Ireland)

In May 2022, we signed up to the Irish Women in Finance Charter. This is a collaboration between industry and Government under the Ireland for Finance strategy, the government's blueprint for the development of the international financial services sector. Diversity is a key theme of the strategy. We have set ourselves a goal of improving female representation at senior levels from 44% to 48% by December 2025.
